PP – MA – 48 – SM Pollinators

Summary

In this project, the kindergarten children will build a pollinator hotel. They learned that pollination is very important for plants, animals, and people, and that insects like bees and butterflies help with this process. By building the hotel, the children want to give insects a safe place to rest and be protected.

Research Question

How can we help pollinator insects by building a hotel for them?

Problem approach

Pollinator insects, like bees, butterflies, and ladybugs, are very important because they help plants grow. Without them, many flowers and trees wouldn’t have fruits or seeds. But many of these insects don’t have safe places to live. So, we want to build a hotel to give them a safe and comfortable place to rest and help nature.

Background

Pollinator insects, like bees and butterflies, help flowers grow by moving pollen from one flower to another. Pollen is like a special dust that helps flowers make seeds and fruits. Flowers need insects to visit them so they can share their pollen.

The flower has special parts that help it make seeds. When an insect like a bee lands on a flower to get nectar, the pollen sticks to the insect. Then, when the insect flies to another flower, it brings the pollen with it. This helps new flowers and plants grow!

We need to take care of pollinator insects because they are very important for nature. We can help by making sure they have safe places to live, like the pollinator hotel we are building.

Objective

To build a pollinator hotel to help insects have a place to rest and be safe, supporting the process of pollination.

Justification

Pollinators play a crucial role in helping plants reproduce, which in turn provides oxygen for all living things. Since not everyone takes care of pollinators, it’s important to create strategies that help protect them in the spaces where we live and learn, such as our homes and schools. By building a pollinator hotel, we can offer a safe space for these important insects and support their role in keeping the environment healthy.

Hypothesis

If we build a pollinator hotel, then we will attract insects that will help the plants grow and reproduce.

Method (materials and procedure)

Materials

  • Wooden boxes
  • Small sticks
  • Bamboo pieces or hollow reeds
  • Straw or hay
  • Bricks with holes
  • Eco-friendly paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paper and pencils to draw the design

Procedure

  1. Learn: The children learned about pollinators and why they are important for plants and people.
  2. Design: The children drew pictures of how they want the pollinator hotel to look.
  3. Build: The children used the wooden boxes and natural materials like sticks, bamboo, and straw to make the hotel. They placed the materials inside the hotel to give insects different places to hide.
  4. Place the Hotel: The hotel will be placed in the school garden where the insects can visit it.
  5. Observe: The children will watch to see how many insects come to the hotel over time.

Results

After building the pollinator hotel, we placed it in the school garden. Over the next few weeks, we observed different insects visiting the hotel. We saw bees flying around the hotel and some ladybugs crawling into the bamboo holes. Butterflies also flew nearby, although they didn’t use the hotel to rest.

The children were very excited to see the insects using the hotel. They took turns checking the hotel every day to see if any new insects arrived. The bees seemed to like the small bamboo sticks the most, and the ladybugs preferred hiding in the straw.

Discussion

Our pollinator hotel was a good design because it had natural materials that gave insects shade, a place to rest, and even a spot to drink water on hot days.

However, we didn’t attract as many insects as we expected. This might be because there weren’t enough flowers around the hotel for the insects to visit. Pollinators like bees and butterflies need flowers like lavender, sunflowers, and rosemary nearby to feel happy and safe.

Next time, we can make the hotel better by putting it in a place with lots of colorful flowers that insects like!

Conclusions

We learned that pollinators like bees and ladybugs need safe places to rest, and our pollinator hotel gave them a good home. By building the hotel, we helped the insects, and in return, they can continue helping the plants by spreading pollen.

The children understood that insects are important for nature because they help flowers and plants grow. We also learned that it’s important to protect insects and give them places to live so that they can keep doing their important job of pollinating.

Building the hotel was a fun way to learn about nature and how we can take care of the environment!
